The phone rang early one morning, before 6 A.M. I answered, sleepily, and heard our younger son say words that can strike fear in the heart of any mom. Jamie almost shouted into the earpiece, “Guess what I did last night, Mom.” Our younger son was in his third year of medical school. He had been challenged regarding his biblical beliefs on many fronts. Only the week before, we had discussed the miracle of the human body and how every facet reveals the heart of the Master Creator. God had led me through the book of Genesis in a personal Bible study several years before. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful picture of God Who chose to be personally involved in the process of creation. God had spoken the very world into existence. He said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He said, “Let there be the sun, the moon, and the stars,” and there were. Hebrews 11:3 tells us that faith allows us to understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God. He could easily have spoken man into existence, but, instead, He chose to be involved in man’s creation.
Our Heavenly Father, when creating man, chose to do what He has always done, in order to have a relationship with man. He reached into the dirt and dust of this world, and, lovingly, He fashioned man. I can only imagine how Jehovah God might have felt as he formed the nose of Adam, determined his hair color, shaped his ears, and counted his fingers and toes. I can almost see God touching his cheek to give him a dimple, shaping his shoulders for strength, and fashioning Adam’s legs for endurance. What a miraculous scene that must have been!
I was reminded of that miraculous creation on that early morning, so many years ago, as Jamie exclaimed, again, “Mom, guess what I did last night! I delivered my first baby. You should have been there. It was great! Mom, do you have any idea how exciting it is to deliver a baby?” he asked.
“No, SON, I don’t,” I replied, tongue in cheek. “Why don’t you tell me?”
Jamie continued, excitedly, “Mom, I was on duty last night, and a lady came in, and I helped her deliver a little baby boy. It was wonderful, Mom. After the delivery, while I was finishing up, we laid the baby on his mom’s chest, and they looked at each other. That’s called bonding, Mom. That’s like when they connect, and his mom is imprinted into his heart. Can you believe it? I don’t think I will ever get over such a miracle.”
Suddenly, I was reminded of Genesis 2:7, once more, when the God of all creation reached into this world of dust and dirt, and He formed a man. He pulled that lump of lifeless creation up to His face and, according to God’s Word, He breathed the breath of life into the nostrils of man. As Adam took his first breath and opened his eyes, his first sight was into the face of a loving Father, and, I believe, man was imprinted with a God-consciousness that nothing else can ever satisfy. In other words, there was bonding between God and man. Man may try to ignore it; he may resist it, and he may resent it, but he can never satisfy that yearning in his soul, apart from the love relationship between God and man for which He was created.
Is your heart settled and at rest, bonded in intimacy, and imprinted forever with the peace that comes only through knowing the Great Creator, loving Father, and eternal God who loved you so much that you are, according to Ephesians 2:10, His masterpiece?
