God, You Are So Amazing!

God, You Are So Amazing!

It was October, three years ago, and our extended family had gathered in Boise, Idaho, for the wedding of my niece, Leah.  It was a happy occasion, with most of our family able to attend, including our younger son and his family who had flown in two days before the wedding.  My brother, John, would be officiating at the wedding and our two granddaughters, Amelia and Evie, were to be the flower girls for the big event.

Idaho is a lovely state, rugged and mountainous.  Normally, October is a beautiful month there, crisp and fresh; however, when we awakened on the day before the wedding, a cold front had blown through, and the day was gray, windy, and threatening.

After the wedding rehearsal, we filed out of the building to a cold, stinging rain for our drive to the Boise State Campus where the rehearsal dinner was to be held in a restaurant overlooking the Broncos’ trademark blue field.  Just as we pulled into the parking area, in addition to the rain, snow began to fall – huge, quarter-sized, wet, heavy snowflakes.  A tiny sliver of sunlight pierced through one small crack in the sky as we all began to scramble out of our vehicles to hurry into the building.

Climbing out of their car, Amelia, a five year old from southern Mississippi who had seldom seen snow, laughingly looked up to the sky and exclaimed in a loud voice, “God, You are so amazing!  It’s raining, it’s snowing, and the sun is shining!  We are in our very own snow globe!”  Twirling in that parking lot, with her face turned upward, that little girl saw the wonder of the moment.

As we adults were hurrying to get into our safe, warm environment, only a child was sensitive to the majesty of God’s power.  Every once in awhile, I still see her little face, with a smile from ear to ear, as she blessed the Lord for His amazing power, danced in His grace, and saw past the clouds between Him and her.

When is the last time that, for just a moment, you saw past the busyness, the rush, the next appointment, the clouds, the rain, or the snow, and, instead, saw the sunshine of God’s love and rejoiced for His greatness?  May God help each of us to seize the moment, be open to Him, and exclaim, with the Psalmist of old in Psalm 118:24, 'This is the day that the Lord has made; (I) will rejoice and be glad in it.'
