My Daddy Fixes People
I have always loved being in the car with children; well, maybe not always. I often caution young mothers about CD and DVD players in the cars. I know how useful they can be for long trips; however, don’t plug manufactured noise in at every opportunity. So many wonderful occasions for conversation have been replaced by mindless videos and educational recordings. Children talk among themselves in the car; you will be amazed at what you learn from them and about them. They will ask you countless questions in the car, giving you stellar teachable moments. In addition, you can talk to them and, given no other alternatives, they actually listen!
We were visiting Mississippi and had driven by our son’s office. It was raining, so I stayed outside in the van with the three children while Nicole went into the office. Evie, about four at the time, was talking about one of her favorite toys that had broken. As she talked about it, I said that, when we got back to the house, her grandfather would fix it.
I told her that Pawpaw was an engineer and very good at fixing all kinds of things. I assured her that there was hardly anything that Pawpaw couldn’t fix. Evie took it all in very somberly, as she quietly asserted, “My daddy fixes people.”
In less than a minute, Evie had thought about Pawpaw’s abilities with things, weighed it against her dad’s profession as a doctor, and decided that what her dad does is important, too. Out of the mouths of babes comes strength and praise… (Psalm 8:2, Matthew 21:16).
I could not help but smile, as I thought that I, too, have a daddy, Abba, Father, who fixes people. I am so grateful that 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us: Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
It is, indeed, good to have a Daddy Who fixes people. Thank you, Father, for fixing me by making me new in Christ Jesus! People trump things every time!
