Wise Direction

“Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4b

It is not enough to put a roof over your children’s heads; you must do all you can to put the Lord into your children’s hearts. The Apostle Paul tells us, “Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” What does this mean?

The word “training” means to “rear up” or “to nurture from childhood.” It is never too late to give your children wise direction, but it is best to start very early. Beginning as babies and toddlers, teach your children Bible truths and principles. This can be done in creative and age-appropriate ways. It is wise to start early!

I don’t have to tell you that you can’t teach your 14-year-old the same way you teach your 6-year-old. You have to seize the opportunity early while the child is young. Francis Xavier, the famous Catholic missionary, said, “Give me children until they are 7 years old and anyone can have them the rest of their lives.”

The most important thing to begin with our children from the time they are born is to get the Word of God into their minds and hearts. As parents, we cannot teach what we do not know. The most important thing we can do as parents is to make sure we are in a personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Then, our children will see first-hand how to live and relate to God. The truths we teach them from God’s Word will come alive for them as they see them lived day in and day out in their parents’ lives.

There is no way to make our children follow Christ. That is a choice they must make. However, when we live out authentic faith in front of them, teach them God’s Word, and pray daily for them, I believe God will do the rest.

Dear Lord, your wisdom is such a blessing and a gift that I don't want to take for granted. It is also a gift I want to make sure my children accept and take hold of as well. Give me the guidance and the opportunity to teach my children to be wise and to follow your path for them. In Jesus' name, amen.
