Becoming A Disciple Maker

May 26, 2025

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

Has anyone ever asked if you're a disciple of Jesus, or do they typically ask if you're a Christian?

The difference matters more than you might think. In our modern culture, we freely use the term "Christian" to describe our faith. But that word appears only three times in Scripture. The word "disciple," on the other hand, occurs 269 times in the New Testament.

That’s because the first-century understanding of discipleship isn’t just classroom knowledge—it means apprenticeship. You don’t just learn facts from a teacher; you pattern your entire life after them.

Salvation happens in a moment—when you accept Christ as Savior. But discipleship develops over a lifetime—as you follow in His footsteps and become like Him. That walk begins with recognizing that salvation is free, but discipleship costs everything.

What would it look like if you moved beyond just being a Christian to actively living as Christ's apprentice today? You listen carefully to the Teacher by reading His Word. You begin to not just read His Words, but practice His compassion, follow His patience and model His prayerfulness. Today, identify yourself not just as a Christian–but as Jesus’ close and attentive apprentice.

Apprenticeship is what you are created for. Walk closely with the Master today–watching His ways, and learning His rhythms of grace.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for saving me by Your grace. Help me grow beyond just identifying as a Christian to truly becoming Your disciple—following Your example in everything I do. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
