"Jesus replied, 'Very truly I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again.'"
John 3:3 (NIV)
Ever notice how Jesus can seem to change the subject when you want to talk with Him about something important? One night, when a religious leader named Nicodemus comes to Jesus to discuss theology, Jesus instead starts talking about birth certificates.
Like most religious leaders of his day, this well-known Pharisee is looking to debate questions of theology and the Scripture with Jesus. That’s because Nicodemus follows every religious rule perfectly. He's better than most people you know— or he knows—more devoted, more disciplined, and more diligent. But Jesus rocks his understanding of the world with one statement: "You must be born again."
You can almost see the blood drain from Nicodemus' face. If anyone should be right with God, it's him. But here's Nicodemus' problem—and maybe yours too. He knows about God without really knowing God.
Nicodemus makes the same mistake that many of us can make. He thinks good works, church attendance, and good behavior earn God's approval. But Jesus reveals truth: your goodness will never be good enough for God.
You may be very religious compared to others. You might be the best person in your neighborhood. But without being born into God's family through faith in Jesus, you don't have a relationship with Him. You need adoption.
God offers you permanent adoption papers today through faith in Christ. Allow that truth to settle in and settle your spirit today—you fully and finally belong to Christ.
Prayer: God, thank You for offering me adoption into Your family through faith in Jesus. Help me understand that salvation comes through Your grace, not my goodness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
