Built to Last

August 7, 2026

"That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh."
Genesis 2:24 (NIV)

That's not a cultural opinion; it’s the original design, and it still holds the same weight it always has. You don't have to read a single study to feel the bitter fruit of that breakdown. You've seen it in your own neighborhood, your own extended family, maybe your own house growing up. A nation will never be stronger than the marriages inside it, and you're watching that math play out right now.

What was the very first institution God ever created?

Not government. Not church. Not school. Before any of those existed, God created marriage, and that order tells you exactly how much weight He intended it to carry.

Marriage was never meant to be one option among many for building a life. It was meant to be the foundation everything else stands on. Because no nation has ever been stronger than the marriages and families inside it.

That's why Genesis says a man "leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife." Leaving isn't optional in this picture. It's required. You cannot fully unite to a spouse while you're still primarily tethered to old patterns, old approval, or old comparisons.

Here's where the verse goes deeper. The word 'one' is the same Hebrew word, echad, used in Deuteronomy 6:4 to describe God Himself, one in being, yet three persons. There's no uniformity in the Trinity. There's unity. The kind of oneness marriage was built to mirror is two distinct people united without either one disappearing into the other.

That's not the culture's idea. It's the original design, and you've felt the bitter fruit when it's ignored, in your own neighborhood, your own family, maybe your own house growing up.

So let’s make it personal. The fruit on the nation's tree starts with the root in your own house. Husbands, when you stay faithful through the boring, unnoticed Mondays of marriage, you’re strengthening more than your own household. Wives, when you choose patience over contempt in a hard season, you're doing the same.

You don't fix a nation by voting alone. You heal a nation one marriage at a time, starting with yours, and starting this week by leaving one old loyalty. Maybe it’s a parent's voice, a past failure you finally let go of, so you can fully unite to your spouse.

When you build your marriage according to the design God laid down first, before any other institution existed, you can trust the foundation under it is strong.

Prayer: Father, show me what I'm still holding onto that's keeping me from fully leaving and uniting. Whatever old loyalty is competing for the place my spouse should hold, help me release it today. Build my marriage on what You intended from the beginning. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
