Closing the Gap

"And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure."

Remember fax machines? If you're old enough to have stood next to one waiting, you know the strange thing about them. The moment a fax machine finishes receiving a transmission, it already holds every bit of the message, every word, complete. But the page doesn't print all at once. It comes through slowly, line by line, that awful grinding sound, while you just stand there waiting for what's already arrived to actually show up on paper.

That is exactly the gap John describes. The moment you gave your life to Jesus, He declared you clean, forgiven of every sin past, present, and future. Theologians call that positional purity, and it is already finished, the way the fax machine already holds the whole message. 

But there's a second, daily kind of purity, the slow work of letting that finished truth actually print itself onto how you live. That part isn't finished yet. That part is happening right now, line by line.

You are not waiting to become acceptable to God. You already are, completely, the instant you trusted Christ. What you're doing now is letting that truth catch up to your habits, your temper, your private moments, the things you do when no one's watching.

Right now, name one specific place where your practical life hasn't caught up to your position in Christ—maybe a habit you keep managing instead of surrendering. Bring it into the light instead of hiding it for one more day. The transmission is already complete. Let it finally print.

You don't earn belonging by cleaning yourself up first. You clean up because you already belong to Him, and the gap is closing every time you let Him in.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for already calling me Yours before I cleaned up anything. Help me stop managing what You've already forgiven and start living in the purity you’ve called me to. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
