Facedown First

"I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless."

Genesis 17:1 (NIV)

William Ernest Henley writes "Invictus" flat on his back in a hospital bed. He'd already lost one leg to tuberculosis and now his other was at risk. Staring at the ceiling, in pain and facing an uncertain future, he writes these famous words: "I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul."

Beautiful writing. But completely wrong.

God goes silent on Abraham for thirteen years with no vision, no voice, and no visit. Then El Shaddai appears. That name, used here for the very first time in Scripture, means the God of power, the one who controls all things by his strength. This almighty God doesn't hand Abraham the wheel. He says, "Walk before me faithfully and be blameless."

Walking before God means He's watching every step, every turn, every choice. He's guiding from behind. Abraham responds by falling on his face. Not from fear, but from understanding. When you truly grasp who God is, falling down is the most powerful move you can make.

Maybe today you're convinced you can hold it all together if you just push hard enough. Before you talk with your kids or approach that hard conversation, try something different. Surrender the day you haven't lived yet to a God who already knows how it ends. Tell him out loud, "This day is yours. I'm walking before you."

Henley said, "I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul." Today, you can say something better: "You are the master of my fate. You are the captain of my soul." And unlike Henley's version, that one is actually a promise.

Prayer: Lord, I confess I act like the captain of my soul too often. Today I fall before you. You are El Shaddai, all-powerful, and you already see every step ahead of me. I surrender this day to you right now. Walk ahead of me. I'll follow. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
