First Love

January 23, 2026

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

Can a couple really get married and live happily ever after?

A mother curls up on the bed with her little five-year-old daughter to watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. When the story ends, the girl is so excited she runs to greet her dad and says, "Can I tell you the story?" He agrees, and she gets to the part where the prince kisses Snow White and she awakens from her deep sleep. "Daddy, do you know what happened then?" The dad, knowing how fairy tales always end, says, "Sure. They lived happily ever after." She shakes her head. "Oh no, Daddy. They got married."

Out of the mouths of children. Marriage is hard work. A recent survey reveals that seventy-five percent of married people describe their marriage as less than happy. Terrified young adults are choosing to live together instead, believing they don't need a piece of paper to prove their love.

But being happily married isn't about finding the right person. It's about being the right person. And becoming the right person begins with Jesus at the center.

Matthew 6:33 gives you the order. "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." When you seek Him first, everything else finds its proper place.

Too many marriages struggle because neither person is first in love with Jesus. You can't give what you don't have. When your relationship with Christ grows deep, your relationships with others flourish.

Tonight after dinner, sit down together for ten minutes without phones or distractions. Each share one way you've seen God working in your life this week. Then hold hands and thank Him together for making you one. Start building your marriage on the foundation that never cracks.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for trying to build a strong marriage without coming to You first, making You my foundation. Help me seek You first every day. Teach me to love You more so I can love others better. Transform me from the inside out. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
