"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us."
John 1:14, NIV
Have you ever wondered what makes Christmas different from every other holiday?
It’s because God, without ceasing to be God, became a human being. That's the incarnation.
John doesn't mince words in today’s verse. The Word he identifies as God—that same God—became a human being. Jesus wasn’t pretending to be human, and He wasn’t wearing a human costume. Jesus was actually human.
Think about what that means.
Jesus had a biological mother.
He came out of a womb.
He grew physically.
He got tired and needed sleep.
He felt pain.
He wept.
He got angry.
He experienced hunger and needed to eat.
And something else that proves His humanity is that Jesus prayed. God doesn't need to pray. Prayer is a human act.
You will never understand all that God has for you until you believe that God became a human being. The God who created the world came into the world he created as one of us. He became one with us, He became one of us, and He became one for us.
When your life feels overwhelming today, remember that God knows exactly what it's like to struggle. He walked in human skin and felt human pain. He walked in your shoes and through His Spirit, walks next to you now.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for becoming one of us. When I feel alone or misunderstood, help me remember that You know exactly what it's like to be human. You get me, Lord, and You are with me. Help me trust You completely. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
