"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”
Hebrews 1:1 (NIV)
It’s the one story that never grows old.
An angel suddenly appears to a virgin girl named Mary with the impossible news that she'll become pregnant with the Son of God. Another angel tells her fiancé, Joseph, that he'll have a son, but not by him. More angels announce the birth first to the shepherds, the lowest-paid workers in the culture at the time. Wise men travel 715 miles not just to see this baby, but to worship Him.
This is the beginning of the greatest story ever told.
The book of Hebrews was written to Jews who struggled to believe that Jesus’ message was better than the message of Moses or the prophets. They needed final convincing that Jesus wasn't just human, but that He was God Himself.
So the author reminded them that God spoke through their prophets "at many times and in various ways," through burning bushes, stone tablets, and even a stubborn donkey. But now, "in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son."
In other words, this time God didn’t send another prophet. He came as the Prophet. Jesus is "the exact representation" of God's being. He’s the carbon copy of the Father.
The point is this: God’s supreme revelation is in the incarnation. If you want to see God, look at Jesus. If you want to hear God, listen to Jesus. If you want to act like God, live like Jesus.
This week, when you're searching for answers, open the gospels. Ask God to show you who He is through Jesus. Watch how Jesus loved, served, and spoke truth. In Jesus, you have everything that God wants to say and everything you need to know.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being God's final word to me. Help me see the Father through you. Help me see the world through Your eyes. When I'm confused and uncertain, draw me back to your life and words. May I never lose the awe and wonder of the greatest story ever told. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
