"For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."
1 Corinthians 11:26 (NIV)
What if a tiny insect that destroyed an entire town's economy became the symbol of their greatest blessing?
A small Alabama town faces disaster. The boll weevil, a tiny insect, invades their cotton fields and destroys everything. The economy collapses and families face ruin. But some farmers refuse to give up.
One plants peanuts instead—boll weevils won't touch them. Others follow. Before long, bumper peanut crops restore prosperity. The town becomes Enterprise, Alabama; a town that then erects a monument to the boll weevil. They see it now not as a curse, but as a blessing that forced transformation.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 11:26 that when you take the Lord's Supper, you "proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." This meal isn't just about looking backward to the cross, it's about looking forward to the clouds.
The Lord's Supper links Jesus' two comings. It points backward to crucifixion and forward to His return. It's a picture of His death and a promise of His coming.
Enterprise built a monument to death that brought life. God gives you the greatest memorial of all in bread and cup. But the difference is that the boll weevil brought death that became blessing. Jesus' death brings life—period.
Set a reminder on your phone for this Sunday morning. When it goes off, pray: "Jesus, You're coming back. Help me live today like someone who believes it."
Then watch this week for the thing that feels like your boll weevil, that problem destroying everything. Ask God to transform it into your monument of hope. You're living between the cross and the clouds, and He's already writing your redemption story.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, every time I receive communion, remind me You're returning. Help me live with anchored in hope, confident of Your continued care and presence. And give me the kind of anticipation Your Word teaches me to have—getting a taste now of the day when I'll sit at Your table forever. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
