“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 (NIV)
Have you ever felt like your mind is your own worst enemy?
Jesus speaks the words of today’s passage to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. He looks at them and says, "In the world you will have tribulation." Not might have, but you will have. Then Jesus follows that statement with what seems impossible, "But be of good cheer."
How can you possibly be cheerful when anxiety hijacks your thoughts at 2 AM? When depression makes getting out of bed feel like climbing Everest? When your mind races with fears you can't control?
There’s only one reason: Jesus says He has overcome the world. Notice that today’s verse uses “overcome” in the past tense. It’s already done. In every mental battle you face and every anxious thought, He's already defeated the source of it all.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't see a counselor; it means that while you're treating your mind, don't neglect your soul. Spiritual peace doesn't erase mental illness, but it gives you an anchor when your thoughts spiral.
When anxiousness grips you, pray these words, "Jesus, you've overcome this. I'm choosing to trust that You're bigger than what I'm feeling right now." Then take the next small step and make the appointment, take the medicine, call the friend, and remember: You have an Overcomer fighting for you.
Prayer: God, when my mind races with anxiousness and fear, help me remember You've already overcome. While I pursue treatment and care for my mental health, anchor my soul in the peace only You provide. Give me courage to take the next step today. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
