How to Be Politically Correct

October 9, 2025

“Then [Jesus] said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
Matthew 22:21b (NIV)

"My vote doesn't matter anyway." Does that sound familiar?

A young woman once told me this after not voting in another election, frustrated by politics and convinced her single ballot couldn't make a difference. But the truth is that your vote always counts because it counts to God.

In today’s verse, political leaders try to trap Jesus by asking Him about paying taxes. His response tells you something important about your relationship with the government. "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's," He says. In America, you are Caesar; you're part of the government “of the people, by the people, and for the people." If you don't participate, you're not giving to your government what God commands.

In other words, praying, voting, and giving your opinion to your government is not just a right; it's your spiritual responsibility.

But here's how I navigate this, and it might surprise you. I don't vote for the party, the person, or the policy. I vote for principles. I am neither a dyed-in-the-wool Republican nor a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat. I am a washed-in-the-blood Christian. There's only one person guaranteed to get my full allegiance, and that's Jesus.

Why? Because principles outlive parties. Principles outlast people and policies. Different parties will follow different policies, but principles never change.

When you see politics flare in a time like ours, ask yourself: How can I best reflect the biblical principles of righteousness, justice, and care for others in this situation? Don't let party loyalty blind you to character issues and following biblical values.

Research the current events for yourself instead of taking someone else’s word for it. Above all, pray. Pray for wisdom. Pray that those who disagree do so agreeably. And as we pray, may our leaders pass good laws that help make good citizens.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for every government leader. Grant each one wisdom and discernment as they consider the important issues of our time. And help me stand for biblical principles rather than party politics. Lord, let the government represent Your influence in our communities and across this country. In Jesus' name, Amen.
