“Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
John 8:10-11 (NIV)
What’s your worst nightmare? Getting caught red-handed in your biggest failure with everyone watching?
Picture this scene in John chapter eight. Religious leaders drag a woman caught in adultery and bring her to Jesus. They demand her execution according to Jewish law as she huddles on the dusty ground, exposed, humiliated and certain this is her final moment.
But when they demand Jesus’ verdict, He stoops down and writes in the dirt.
“When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7 NIV) After Jesus’ words, her accusers drop their stones and walk away, one by one. Soon only Jesus remains–the only One qualified to condemn her.
Those unqualified to condemn her couldn’t; the One person who could condemn her, wouldn’t.
But notice Jesus’ acquittal. He offers grace without excusing sin. "Neither do I condemn you," He declares. Then He adds, "Go now and leave your life of sin." Grace and truth stand together.
You might think your past disqualifies you from God's love. This woman certainly did. But Jesus offers you the same amazing combination—complete forgiveness and a fresh start. He doesn't minimize your mistakes, and He doesn't maximize your shame.
When you receive His grace, you discover the power to walk away from what once held you captive. Those destructive habits? You can begin anew today. Walk into your home, work, family with this declaration: I am forgiven and given a fresh start.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for offering grace without condemning me. Thank You for speaking the truth gently. Help me receive Your forgiveness and find strength to leave behind what hurts me and others. In Your Name, Lord, Amen.
