"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."
1 John 4:1 (ESV)
Have you ever wished someone could stop danger before it ever reached you?
David Vetter was born in 1971 with a disease that left his body defenseless against the smallest germ. Twenty seconds after birth, doctors placed him inside a sterile plastic bubble. Everything that entered got disinfected first, and everyone near him had to be free of anything that could kill him. David lived almost all thirteen years inside that bubble, breathing filtered air, touching nothing that hadn't been made safe.
I would like to place a bubble like that on the church against false teaching. But that is not the world we live in. So the Apostle John tells you to test. "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1, ESV)
Being a believer isn't about believing everything you hear. It means you disbelieve just as hard as you believe. If you believe there is a God, you don't believe in atheism. If you believe Jesus is the only way to God, every other way is the wrong way.
When someone tells you every path leads to God, don't nod to keep the peace. Say, "I don't believe that," and tell them why.
You were never given a bubble. You were given a test, and it works every time you run it.
Prayer: Father, I don't want to hide from what's false. I want to know it the moment I hear it. Give me the courage to test everything against Your Word and the boldness to say no when something isn't true. In Jesus' name, Amen.
