"When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal."
2 Kings 2:1 (NIV)
Have you ever wondered if your daily routines really matter in the grand scheme of things?
When the courtiers of Henry IV of France complimented him on his strength in his later years, suggesting he might live to be 80, the king offered a perspective that looks similar to Elijah’s as he said, "A man who has lived well has always lived long enough, however early he may die."
Henry understood this: what truly matters isn't the length of your days but how you live each one with purpose.
Elijah's final walk with God took him through significant places that told the story of his faith: Gilgal, a beginning place for Israel; Bethel, the "House of God"; Jericho, the site of battles and victories; and finally, the Jordan, representing the place of transition and possibility. God led Elijah step by step through right until his very last day on earth.
Like Henry IV and Elijah, you don’t have to worry about how long you will live; you can focus on living purposefully today. Each of your conversations and acts of obedience matter eternally.
What step is God asking you to take today? A ministry that needs your gifts? A relationship needing reconciliation? Don't wait for tomorrow. Your life's purpose continues until your final breath. Live today as if it matters eternally—because it does.
Prayer: Father, thank You for giving me purpose each day. Help me see the eternal value in each step I take today. Guide me to live faithfully, knowing that my walk with You is intentional right to the end. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
