“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
Napoleon's foreign minister once said, "You can do anything you like with bayonets, except sit on them." In other words, a powerful tool is useless if you refuse to put it to work. The same is true of your Bible. Too many people own one, carry one, even display one, but never open it.
The reality is that the book they’re leaving closed is already alive. Hebrews 4:12 begins, "For the word of God is alive and active." The Greek word for "alive" literally means "continuously and always living."
You can’t kill it. The enemies of God have tried to burn the Bible, ban the Bible, and thought they had buried the Bible. But the Word of God has a habit of coming back to life and outliving the pallbearers!
Today's verse not only says the Word is alive. It says it is "active," which is the Greek word that gives us our English word "energy." Not potential energy, but kinetic. It is always at work, and it does work.
I don’t mean just on certain days or in some situations, but this day, in your situation, right now. The same God who breathed life into this Book is ready to breathe life into what you're facing today.
Open the Word of God for five minutes today. Bring what's weighing you down and ask God to speak to it directly. He already has a word for it. You just need to open the Book.
This Book has outlived every generation that tried to bury it. It will outlive whatever is trying to bury you.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Today I'm opening it and asking You to speak directly into what I'm going through right now. Breathe life into my situation through Your Word. I'm ready to receive. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
