Same, Yet Different

“The man said,

‘This is now bone of my bones

    and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called ‘woman,’

    for she was taken out of man.’”

Adam opens his eyes and sees her for the first time. He doesn't ask her name or where she came from. He says, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh." It's the first poem in human history, and it comes from a man recognizing something he didn't have to be taught to recognize.

What he's seeing is a tension that sits at the center of the very first marriage, and still defines every marriage since. The Hebrew word translated "suitable" is kenegdo, and it's built from two smaller words, one meaning "like" and one meaning "opposite." Put together, they describe something that mirrors you and stands apart from you in the same breath. That's precisely what Eve was to Adam, and what a wife is to a husband still.

Theologically, she's the same. Eve is fully human, fully made in God's image, equal in every way that matters before God. Biologically, she's different, not a man, but a woman. That difference isn't a flaw to overcome. It's the entire design. Two people who are only alike could never become "one flesh" the way Genesis describes, because there'd be nothing to bring together that wasn't already identical.

Let’s make it practical. This week, don’t expect your spouse to think, process, or respond the way you would. Their difference isn't a malfunction you need to fix. The next time you disagree, try saying out loud, "Help me understand this the way you see it," before you explain why your way is right. That sentence treats the difference as the design, not the defect.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for making my spouse like me in what matters most and different from me in ways I don't always understand. Help me see those differences as Your design instead of a problem to fix. Teach me to listen before I explain. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
