“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
Have you ever caught yourself wondering whether God is keeping score? And if so, how you're doing?
Most of us have a mental ledger running. Church attendance? Check. Bible reading? Trying. Patience with your kids this morning? Not great. That running tally is exhausting, and it's built on a lie.
God doesn’t keep a ledger. He proves it on the day He chooses Israel’s next king. He sends Samuel to find Israel's next king among Jesse's sons. Walking in, Samuel sees the oldest, who is tall and strong, the obvious choice, and assumes he's found his man.
Then comes God’s word, ‘The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ (1 Samuel 16:7b).
Out comes David. The young shepherd boy that nobody thought to call in from the field. And God says, that's the one. Because God has always been doing His most important work beneath the surface.
The heart has always been what matters most. Ask any cardiologist. The top ten deadliest diseases in the world all kill from the inside. Doctors don't just look at you; they take blood, run MRIs, and examine what's beneath the surface. God has always worked the same way.
The next time you snap at someone you love, or lie awake replaying a conversation, or feel like you're failing somewhere that matters, stop and ask God honestly: "What do you see when you look at me right now?"
Maybe He sees the fear that looks like busyness, or the hurt that's learned to look like not caring. Maybe it’s faithfulness nobody around you has acknowledged. Bring it all. Because the God who looked past every impressive son in that lineup of Jesse’s sons and chose the one nobody called, is the same God who is looking at you and saying, “that's the one.”
Prayer: Lord, thank You for truly seeing me. I want to be genuinely healthy on the inside, not just looking the part on the outside. Examine my heart today, and where you find something that doesn't belong, I trust you to change it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
