Speaking Truth When It Costs

May 6, 2025

"The king asked them, 'What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?' They replied, 'He had a garment of hair and had a leather belt around his waist.' The king said, 'That was Elijah the Tishbite.'"
2 Kings 1:7-8 (NIV)

How many conversations have you avoided because you were afraid of the reaction?

Patricia Heaton, the actress from "Everybody Loves Raymond," heads an organization called "Feminists for Life" in Hollywood, taking an unpopular pro-life stand that has risked her career.

When asked why she would take such a risk, she said: "As a Christian, it will not be Barbra Streisand I'm standing in front of when I have to make an accounting of my life."

We live in a culture where speaking biblical truth often comes with a price tag. You may be labeled intolerant, lose friends, hurt your career opportunities, or face rejection. These fears aren't imaginary; they're real challenges for Christ-followers today.

In today's passage, Elijah delivers God's rebuke to King Ahaziah, knowing it could cost him his life. The king immediately recognizes Elijah, identifying his appearance and his unwavering message. Elijah had developed a reputation for speaking hard truths regardless of the consequences.

What would it look like if you became known as someone who speaks truth with both clarity and compassion? That means you don’t have to be harsh or judgmental, but you also don’t speak a message that’s watered down or compromised.

Your speaking the truth might be exactly what someone needs to hear to find their way to God. Start by asking God for both wisdom and boldness. Then look for one opportunity this week to lovingly communicate God's perspective on a difficult issue.

Remember, standing for truth may make you unpopular, but your courageous words could be the lifeline someone needs.

Prayer: Lord, I know that nothing is hidden from Your sight. Search me and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Thank You that when I humble myself before You, You extend mercy even when justice is deserved. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
