The Boy in the Bubble

June 15, 2026

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”
Matthew 7:15 (NIV)

In 1971 a baby boy named David Vetter was born in Houston, Texas. Within twenty seconds of delivery, doctors place him inside a sealed protective bubble. His body has no working immune system. He cannot feel illness, cannot detect infection, cannot sense anything trying to destroy him from the inside. He lives that way for thirteen years.

Jesus has a word for people who lose the ability to sense what is spiritually dangerous. In Matthew 7:15 He issues the strongest warning He gives in the entire Sermon on the Mount: "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves." The Greek word for "watch out" literally means beware, which is code red, DEFCON 1. Jesus is not adding a footnote. He is sounding an alarm.

Here is the problem. False prophets do not announce themselves. They dress like shepherds and sound like shepherds. They use the same vocabulary, the same titles, and the same Bibles. They are just teaching a different dictionary. And if you cannot feel the difference, you are spiritually living in a bubble.

The next time a teacher, a podcast, or a book grabs your attention, do not just ask whether it feels good. Ask whether it lines up with Scripture. Pull out your Bible and test it the way a treasury agent tests a dollar bill, not by studying counterfeits, but by knowing the real thing so well that the fake immediately stands out. That is the immune system God gave you.

David Vetter needed a bubble because his body could not protect itself. You have something better than a bubble. You have the Word.

Prayer: Lord, I don't want to live in a spiritual bubble, feeling safe but actually in danger. Give me discernment. Help me love Your Word enough to know it, and know it well enough to recognize when something is off. Protect me from what I can't see on my own. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
