"After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."
Hebrews 1:3b (NIV)
Have you ever felt like you've lost everything that mattered?
Jesus did too. He owned nothing and gave up even that. In the four gospels, the only thing we're told Jesus owned was His cloak. And Roman soldiers gambled for it while He died. Jesus literally owned just the clothes on His back, and was even buried in a borrowed grave.
But Hebrews 1:3 is the reason Jesus's losses became your gain. Today’s verse begins, "After he had provided purification for sins." This man, this simple physical man, is God's vessel of eternal salvation. As God, He could take God's hand. As a man, He could take man's hand. As the God-man, He could join both hands together.
If there is no God-man, there is no way man can ever relate to God. Jesus had to be fully human to step in as our substitute and sacrifice, and fully God to make that sacrifice count for eternity.
Maybe you've lost your job, your marriage, your health, or your hope. Jesus lost everything earthly, too. But despite his losses, Hebrews 1:2 says Jesus was still the 'heir of all things.' That lonely, crucified carpenter holds the title deed to everything. People ask, "What's this world coming to?" You don’t have to wonder. It's coming to Jesus.
When you feel like you've lost something dear, remember that the One who owns the universe gave up everything to provide for your purification. Jesus left the throne of heaven for you. The One who owns the universe has already secured what matters most, your purification.
You may have lost much, but you’ll never lose Him. And He is everything.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for leaving heaven to die on the cross for my sins. When I'm overwhelmed by feeling like I’ve lost my health, my savings, my sense of security, help me remember that You owned only a cloak but now hold the universe. You are my Savior and my King. When I feel like I have nothing, remind me I have You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
