The Dark Side

March 13, 2026

“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead.”
John 3:19 (NIV)

You know that moment when you walk into a dark room and flip the light switch? The darkness doesn't fight back, it just disappears. Light always wins.

Jesus declares in John 3:19 that "Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil." He's talking about Himself. Throughout the gospels, Jesus calls Himself the light of the world. In John 9:5, He says, "While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

The good news is that when Jesus returned to heaven, He didn’t leave this world in darkness. He sent the Holy Spirit to live in His followers, which means you become the light of the world. In Matthew 5:14, Jesus tells His disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden."

Jesus' light drove out darkness. That same light now lives in you. Whatever struggle you haven't told anyone about, any hurt you’re harboring, or the truth you're avoiding, lose their power the moment you bring it into His light.

Walking in the light means choosing to trust God when hiding feels safer. Maybe your marriage feels dead and you're tempted to just live like roommates instead of fighting for it. Ask God to give you the courage to say what needs to be said. Then start the hard conversation.

When chronic pain makes you wonder if God even sees you, instead of hiding your doubt, tell a trusted friend, "I'm struggling to believe God cares right now." Bringing it into the light breaks its power.

When your adult child is making destructive choices and you want to pretend everything's fine, speak the truth in love, "I see what's happening, and I'm here when you're ready to talk."

Light doesn't just expose darkness, it destroys it. Every time you choose honesty over hiding, you flip the switch.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the light that came into my darkness. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so completely that Your light shines through every part of my life. Help me live in truth and walk in the light today. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
