"Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
Genesis 15:1 (NIV)
In Cherokee tradition, a young man's rite of passage is terrifying. Blindfolded, he's led deep into the woods and left alone all night. Every snapping branch makes his heart pound. Every rustling shadow feels like danger closing in. He has no idea whether he'll survive until morning.
But when dawn finally breaks and the blindfold comes off, he sees his father is standing right there. Armed. Alert. He had been there the whole night, watching, guarding, never once leaving his son's side.
That is the God factor.
Think about where Abraham is standing in Genesis 15. He has just defeated five kings against impossible odds, a military miracle by any measure. He should be riding high. Instead, fear has him in its grip.
Sound familiar? You can have the best week of your life, get a promotion, receive clear diagnosis or have had a relationship repair, and still lie awake at night with your heart racing about what comes next.
God's answer to Abraham in today’s verse isn’t a pep talk, but a promise: "I am your shield, your very great reward" (Genesis 15:1b, NIV). Two things you'll never stop needing are protection and provision. And both are already yours.
Write down the fear that's been following you this week. Beside it, write: God is already standing watch. He never once left you alone in the dark.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your promise. Sometimes I'm more afraid than I let on. The nights feel long and the pressure feels real. But You are my shield. And not someday, but right now. Help me trust You when I cannot always see the way ahead. In Your Name I pray, Amen.
