The Haircut Battle

June 16, 2025

"Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person's faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.
Romans 14:1-2 (NIV)

Have you ever had a relationship damaged over something that seems trivial in hindsight?

Picture this: a college freshman walks up to his family's front door after months away from home. Instead of a warm welcome, his father meets him with three blunt words: "Get a haircut." That freshman was me. That day, I learned the difference between personal preferences and biblical standards—and how confusing the two can damage relationships.

The early church struggled with this same issue. Jewish Christians wouldn't eat pork because of their heritage. Gentile Christians had grown up eating everything. Jesus said all food was clean. (See Mark 7:19) But instead of focusing on their shared faith in Jesus, they were fighting over dinner menus. The problem wasn't their appetites, it was their attitudes.

We can experience a similar situation today. Christians get worked up over dress codes, entertainment choices, or political preferences. We confuse our personal standards with biblical commands. The weaker believer might say, "Feel as I feel, think as I think, and then I'll fellowship with you."

However, the Word of God offers a better way: accepting others for being themselves. Never compromise biblical convictions, but never push your preferences on anyone. God made us different on purpose.

Today, ask yourself: Where am I rejecting someone else instead of accepting them? Clear your criticism, adjust your attitude, and watch your heart relax as relationships improve.

Prayer: Father, help me distinguish between Your clear commands and my personal preferences. Give me grace to accept other believers even when we disagree. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
