The One Who Brought Her

"So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man."
Genesis 2:21-22 (NIV)

Why didn't God simply create Adam and Eve at the same moment?

He could have. Instead, He let Adam exist alone with Him first. Adam had no other human voice or face, just fellowship with God Himself. Before there was ever a husband or a wife, there was God, and that order matters. God intended to be Adam's first love before anyone else's, and after Eve was formed, God intended to be her first love too.

Then comes the line that reframes the entire story. God forms the woman from the man's own rib, and "he brought her to the man." From beginning to end, this moment was never primarily about a man and a woman finding each other. It was about God doing the finding, the building, and the bringing. 

Eve becomes the first bride in history to be given away by God Himself, which is exactly why a father giving away his daughter still carries a sacred sense today. The father stands in for God, the One who is actually bringing two people together.

So if you're praying about a future spouse, you can't measure it only by chemistry, timing, or how things feel this week. Ask God, "Is this someone You're calling me toward?" But if you're already married, that question isn't yours to keep going over. The vow you made settled it.

Your job now is to trust that God did the bringing, and live like He did. When the marriage gets hard, you don't look for an exit because you're not dealing with a maybe; you're keeping a promise. When your spouse irritates you at the dinner table, you don't respond with contempt, because contempt is what you'd show something you found on your own, not something God gave you. You treat them instead as the gift God brought to your door, on purpose, even on the days they don't feel like one.

God didn't just find you a spouse. He brought them, and He's not done bringing.

Prayer: Father, thank You for being in the building business and the bringing business, even now. Help me see my marriage as something You authored, not something I stumbled into. Give me the faith to trust Your hand even when this week feels hard. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
