"But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge."
1 John 2:20 (ESV)
Ever had that moment when something that someone is saying sounds completely convincing, but something inside you just knows it's off? You couldn't argue the point if someone asked you to. You just know.
That knowing has a name. John calls it being anointed.
That word “anointed” in today’s verse means more than a one-time blessing. It’s marking you as set apart and equipped, the way a king or priest was anointed for a specific job. Your job is to recognize truth, and the Spirit of Truth living in you helps you do exactly that.
Jesus promised the same thing in John 14:26, that the Spirit would teach you all things and bring His words back to your memory the moment you need them.
I remember sitting in class at a liberal college and later in a liberal seminary, listening to ideas that sounded clear and convincing. Before I could argue a single point, something in my heart said, that is not right. It was the Holy Spirit connecting straight to the Word already in me.
That's not a feeling you talk yourself out of. It's Him functioning, like your own pulse, running whether you notice or not. And it's grounded in His Word, not another person's opinion. What someone talks you into, someone else can eventually talk you out of. What the Holy Spirit anchors in you through Scripture, no one can ever pry loose.
You don't need a seminary degree to practice this. Next time a headline, a coworker, or your own thoughts tell you something that doesn't sit right, stop and pray, Lord, is this true? Then open the Word and let Him answer instead of your anxious thoughts.
Let the same anointing that steadied John when he wrote these words steady you right now.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank You for working Your truth into me and thank You that You promised to bring Your Word to my memory, right when I need it. When something false gets close to my heart, make it obvious. Lord, help me live daily in Your Word, learn Your truth, and recognize Your leading. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
