Touch, Tilt, Look

"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God." 
Luke 8:11 (NIV)

In Canada, every new citizen is required to memorize a four-word motto and practice it until it becomes second nature: touch, tilt, look at, look through. That is how they are trained to identify counterfeit currency. Not by studying fake bills, but by knowing the real thing so thoroughly that anything off immediately stands out. You feel it before you can even explain why.

Jesus says the same principle applies to false teaching. In Luke 8:11, He tells us, "The seed is the word of God." That is where everything starts. If the seed is right, the root will be right, and the right root will produce the right fruit. If the seed is wrong, nothing downstream can fix it. It is not complicated, but it is serious.

You cannot detect a counterfeit prophet on feelings alone. Treasury agents are not trained on impressions. They are trained on the bill. And the only way to correct false teaching when you encounter it, in a podcast, in a conversation, in a book your neighbor cannot stop recommending, is to know what is true so thoroughly that something off feels wrong the moment you hear it.

This week, pick one book of the Bible and read it straight through. Don’t start by reading someone else’s interpretation of it, just read the book itself. Underline what surprises you. Write down what you do not understand and look it up. The goal is not more information. The goal is for His Word to be so recognizable and deep in your heart, that a counterfeit does not stand a chance.

Prayer: Lord, I want to know Your Word the way a treasury agent knows a real bill, not just well enough to feel inspired, but well enough to know when something is wrong. Grow that in me, Father. Let the seed go deep. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
