“Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight; so You are right in Your verdict and justified when You judge.”
Psalm 51:3-4 (NIV)
Every child does it at some point. Knowing they are wrong, doing something they shouldn’t do, breaking something valuable, or some other offense against mom or dad, they crawl into a corner and bury themselves under a blanket and hide. That tendency doesn’t disappear with age.
We see “cover-ups” on the news, people hiding sin and misdeeds. We’ve all swept wrongs under the rug, hoping no one notices.
This goes back to the beginning. Adam and Eve, the very first sinners, covered themselves with leaves when they saw their nakedness. You might not reach for leaves, but perhaps you deny or rationalize that it’s not as bad as others think.
But today’s verse reminds you of a truth that brings lasting freedom. God knows your sins, and still asks you to come to Him. At the heart, all of our wrongdoing is against Him.
But you don’t have to try to cover anything. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He who covers his transgressions shall not prosper.” But thankfully, there is a way to uncover our sin, and in doing so, find it fully covered by God.
Through Jesus, we have “propitiation” for our sins (Romans 3:25). That doesn’t mean God didn’t excuse your sin. He has provided the means, His own blood, to erase them. Through His death on the cross, Jesus doesn’t merely cover your sins. He takes them away.
Laid bare before Christ, your sins are paid for fully on the cross. You can finally come out from under the covers, free to live before God without fear of punishment.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for taking away my sin completely on the cross. I’m tired of hiding. Help me live free from fear of punishment and transparent before you. Uncover anything in my life that doesn't please you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
