When Evil Surrounds

May 5, 2025

"But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, 'Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, "Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?"'
2 Kings 1:3 (NIV)

Have you ever felt like the only person standing for what's right in a room full of people who don't care?

Those moments can feel isolating. You might wonder if speaking up is worth the potential backlash. In today's passage, Elijah faces this exact dilemma. Despite witnessing God's power through drought, fire, and judgment, King Ahaziah still turns to false gods rather than the Lord when he's injured.

Evil doesn't retire. After confronting Ahab and Jezebel, Elijah might have hoped for a break, but their son Ahaziah continued their wicked legacy. The God life doesn't avoid evil; it confronts it with truth and love.

Standing for God in your workplace, among friends, or even in your family can be daunting. But remember this: you're never standing alone. The same God who empowered Elijah stands with you.

This week, identify one situation where you've remained silent about the truth. Ask God for courage to speak up lovingly. It might be as simple as redirecting a gossip-filled conversation or gently questioning a friend's unethical choice.

Evil will always exist in our world, but God has equipped you to face it directly with courage rather than shrinking back in fear. You'll naturally stand out from the crowd when you look up to God.

Prayer: Father, give me Elijah's courage to confront evil with Your truth. Help me to stand tall in situations where Your name is dishonored. Help me trust You and thank You for standing with me and empowering me in every situation. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
