"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
John 1:14 (NIV)
Your friend is making choices that are destroying their life, and you're caught in an impossible tension. Speak up and risk seeming judgmental, or stay silent and watch them spiral downward. You need both courage and compassion—truth and grace.
This is exactly how John describes Jesus in today’s verse. He doesn't choose between being truthful or gracious; He embodies both perfectly. Jesus tells the woman caught in adultery, "Go and sin no more"—that's truth. But He also says, "Neither do I condemn you"—that's grace. He refuses to compromise on either one.
You face this same tension every day. Lean too heavily toward grace, and you might enable destructive behavior, thinking God's forgiveness covers everything. Swing too far toward truth, and you become harsh, bitter, and unloving, which is exactly the opposite of Christ's heart.
Only Jesus achieved perfect balance because only He paid the ultimate price for both. He demonstrated truth by dying for sin's consequences, and grace by offering forgiveness freely.
Today, when you trust Jesus, you too can become a model of the tension He models. When you speak difficult truths, wrap them in genuine love. When you extend grace, don't compromise what's right. As you do, you reflect Jesus' character to a watching world.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the way You balance truth with grace. Help me speak Your truth wrapped in Your grace. Show me how to love people enough to be honest while extending the same mercy You've given me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
