Beyond Sunday

January 9, 2026

“Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:42-45 (NIV)

What if serving Jesus could become the most fulfilling part of your entire week, and not only a few hours on Sunday?

Every Sunday you're there, holding doors, handing out bulletins, and greeting people with a smile. You're serving, and then you go home. Sometimes we serve on Sunday, and think we’ve fulfilled our Christian service duty for the week.

But Jesus said much more about serving. "Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:43-45, NIV). He said that serving isn’t about exercising power over others or checking a box. It’s giving your whole life away for the sake of others.

Read these verses again. Jesus didn’t say "be a servant one hour per week." He asked His disciples to be servants, period. It’s a lifestyle where you're always looking for ways to meet needs through your talents, gifts, and abilities. Putting others first. Thinking not just about your desires but about what others lack that you can provide.

Jesus, the Son of God, deserved to be served. But He lived a life of relentless service. And He instructs you to follow His example. Monday through Saturday matter just as much as Sunday morning.

What if service wasn't confined to church roles but became how you operated everywhere? At work, helping that overwhelmed coworker. At school, tutoring the struggling student. At home, anticipating needs before they're spoken. In your neighborhood, showing up when everyone else stays inside.

Serving on Sunday is a launch pad into your lifestyle of service every day of the week. Then Monday comes, and you take that same heart into every room you enter. Jesus doesn't want your service to end when the sanctuary empties. He wants to meet you in the breakroom, the classroom, the kitchen table, and bless the world through you there, too.

Prayer: Father, thank You that Your Son Jesus gave me the ultimate example of servanthood—not just in practical ways but to the point of giving His own life for my sin. Reveal ways I can serve others every day. Broaden my horizon and help me act as a servant in every facet of life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
