“‘Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.”
1 Kings 18:21 (NIV)
Have you ever seen a six-year-old usher at a wedding?
A little boy was recruited to help seat guests at his uncle's wedding. After getting quick instructions, he confidently said, "Oh yeah, I got this, Pop. That's easy." When the first guests arrived, he offered his arm to a lady and asked, "Now, Ma'am, whose side are you on?"
That innocent question strikes at the heart of what Elijah challenged Israel with on Mount Carmel: "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him" (1 Kings 18:21).
Notice how the people of Israel said nothing. Israel had been attempting the spiritual equivalent of serving two masters—maintaining enough religious appearance to feel spiritual while embracing the idolatrous practices of their culture. They were spiritual fence-sitters.
Perhaps you can relate at times. Have you ever prayed for God’s blessing, but felt reluctant to accept his lordship over your finances or how you spend your time? What about praying for reconciliation but refusing to humble yourself and apologize?
You can let go of half-hearted devotion to embrace wholehearted surrender. It takes a simple choice. God is always on your side, and when you trust Him each day, you side with Him.
Prayer: Father, I confess that I struggle to trust You completely. Like Elijah, help me put my trust in You, declaring my allegiance to You, every moment of every day. Thank You for choosing me–I choose Your side today, completely and without reservation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
