And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1 John 5:11 (ESV)
One of the most important documents I own is my birth certificate. One day I may get dementia and forget who I am, or someone may try to deny who I am, but I have a certificate that settles it.
Every child of God has a document like that. God’s Word is your spiritual birth certificate, and the Spirit who wrote it cannot lie.
Today’s verse puts it in black and white. “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” Jesus doesn’t just give you eternal life. He is eternal life, and you can never lose Him.
But that certificate belongs only to those who have truly been born again. If you’ve never turned from your sin and trusted Christ, settle it today. Pray, “Lord Jesus, I’m a sinner and I need a Savior, and I trust You right now.” Nail it down with the hammer of faith and the guarantee of God.
If you have trusted Christ but still wander in a desert of doubt, stop basing your assurance on how you felt last Sunday or how badly you blew it yesterday. Open your Bible to 1 John 5:11, write today’s date in the margin, and sign your name beside it.
You know so because God says so, and of that you can be dead certain.
Prayer: Father, thank You that my salvation doesn’t rest on my memory, my moods, or my worst day. Your Word says You gave me eternal life in Your Son, and I’m signing my name to that today. When doubt tries to deny who I am, remind me of what You’ve written. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
