"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.'"
John 8:31 (NIV)
Ever feel like you’re the only one willing to stand for something?
You're swimming upstream while everyone else floats downstream. That's what following Jesus can feel like in today's culture: exhausting, lonely, and seemingly impossible.
When Jesus speaks these words to new believers, He knows what He's asking. His teachings shock the religious leaders: serve the poor instead of gaining wealth, forgive enemies instead of seeking revenge, love sacrificially instead of protecting yourself. In a culture obsessed with rules and regulations, Jesus presents something radically different: follow God, not formulas.
Today, His teachings remain just as countercultural. Your world screams "every person for themselves,” climb the ladder, secure your comfort, avoid risks while grabbing rewards. Jesus' call to selfless living can sound naive or foolish.
But Jesus understands that human hearts haven't changed in two thousand years. The deepest needs today mirror those of His time. Our hearts still hunger for love, forgiveness, and purpose. You and I still face the same fundamental choice between self and sacrifice.
But Jesus promises that if you hold to His teaching and His message, He will hold onto you. You might face ridicule or disapproval for your faith. You might be told to keep quiet.
But when you believe in Him, you can withstand any opposition. You can boldly offer hope to a world desperately searching for truth. And when you put your trust in Him, He reassures you with everlasting security: You are His.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for Your Word, and how You strengthen me to live in truth. I want my actions and words to look like Jesus. Help me love sacrificially, serve humbly, and share Your hope boldly. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
