Mature Disciple

April 17, 2026

“...and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20 (NIV)

Have you ever noticed how much energy we pour into the wedding day, the graduation ceremony, the altar call, and how little we talk about what happens after?

Saying yes to Jesus is the beginning of the story, not the end of it. His final words to His followers make that unmistakably clear. He calls them not just to make disciples but to teach them to obey everything He has commanded. And that word "everything" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

It means the comfortable parts and the costly ones, the promises and the hard commands. It means both the grace and the judgment that churches so often set aside when the room gets uncomfortable.

The truth is that light teaching produces shallow disciples. When the full weight of Scripture is softened down to what feels safe or easy or culturally acceptable, you don't get people who are easier to love. You get people who are harder to sustain. They were never given the real truth that actually holds a life together.

We preach and teach not for information but for transformation, and those two things are not the same.

What area of Scripture have you thought you have been believing but are actually ignoring in practice? Honoring your spouse, sharing your faith, and how you treat someone who has hurt you. Ask God specifically what obedience looks like there this week, and then do that one thing.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your commands. I don't want to be someone who just knows the right answers. I want to be someone whose life is actually being shaped by You. Show me where I'm being selective with Your Word, and give me the courage to obey the parts I’d rather avoid. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
