New DNA

"No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God."
1 John 3:9 (ESV)

How does God actually change someone from the inside out?

Not by attacking the problem from the outside, the way doctors used to treat certain genetic blood diseases. A few years ago physicians began treating those diseases differently, by implanting healthy stem cells carrying new DNA directly into the body. Those new cells didn't negotiate with the disease. They didn't coexist with it. They overruled it and drove it out, just by being present.

That's exactly what John says happens the moment you're born again. "God's seed abides in him." The Holy Spirit isn't a polite guide suggesting where you should go. He's a guard planted inside you to keep you from where you shouldn't be. 

John isn't promising you'll never sin again. He's promising sin will no longer dominate you, intimidate you, or permanently own you.

The world has tried everything else to fix what's broken in people, from education to incarceration, legislation, and rehabilitation. None of it touches the real issue, because the problem was never what you do on the outside. It's who you are on the inside, and only regeneration changes that.

What do you do when an old craving rises up today, the one you've fought before and thought you'd already beaten? Don't try to white-knuckle it through your willpower. Pray instead, "God, Your seed is already in me. I'm not fighting this alone." Then walk toward whatever obedience looks like right now.

You weren't given new rules. You were given new DNA, and DNA always wins.

Prayer: Father, thank You for planting Your own seed in me instead of just handing me new rules to follow. When the old cravings rise up today, remind me I'm not fighting alone. Let Your Spirit overrule what used to own me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
