One Word, Two Directions

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

People who study cultures have looked at isolated tribes and big modern cities. In every single one, they find some kind of code for right and wrong. Nobody has ever found one without a sense of “ought.” The rules differ from place to place, but the ache to be good never goes away.
That ache comes from somewhere. You are made in God's image, and that means a moral compass was built into you. It was there before you ever made a single choice on your own.
Every culture writes different rules, but they're all trying to explain the same feeling, the sense that some things are right and some are wrong. Jesus takes that code and boils it down to one idea, going two directions: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39, NIV)
Jesus said the most important thing you need to do today is to love God, and love people.
The order matters. Love God first, and He teaches you how to love the person sitting across the table from you. When you try to love others without loving Him first, your “love” gets polluted:
You start caring more about what they think of you than what’s best for them.
You get irritated the moment something doesn’t go your way.
You shout at the driver who cut you off, because loving people has become more about what you get from them than what you can give.
Love that doesn’t start with God runs out fast. It’s generous when it’s convenient and gone the moment it isn’t.
Before you respond next time to the person who is testing your patience, spend 60 seconds talking to God about them first. Ask Him to show you how to love this person.
Get the direction right, and love finally runs the way He’s designed it to.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your love and patience with me. Lord, You already know who will test my patience today! Teach me to love You first so I know how to love them well. Let my love for people flow from the way You love me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
