For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
1 John 5:3 (ESV)
A young lady once wrote a sweet note to the ex-fiancé she broke up with six months earlier. “I just can’t live any longer without you. I was a fool to leave you. Please call me now.” She signs it, “Love always, Linda.” Then she adds, “P.S. Congratulations on winning the lottery.”
What is your motive for doing what you do for God? Today’s verse says, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” Obedience is the thermometer that measures the temperature of your love for God. If you want to know how much you love God, look at how much you obey Him.
You shouldn’t obey God because you feel guilty if you don’t. You ought to obey God because you love God. It is the life of God that makes obedience possible, but it is the love of God that makes obedience desirable.
A mother will spend months getting up in the middle of the night to feed her newborn. That child is not a burden to her. That child is a blessing to her, because she loves that child.
The only time God’s commands are a nuisance is when you want to do what you shouldn’t do. The next time you find yourself dragging your feet to obey God, ask Him to teach you that what He wants for you is always better than what you want for yourself.
If you love God, obey God and let love be the only P.S. on everything you do for Him.
Prayer: Father, You know my motives better than I do. Forgive me for the times I’ve obeyed You out of guilt or to get something from You. Fill me with such love for You that obeying You feels like a blessing instead of a burden. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
