Repenting From Sin

October 23, 2025

 "'Even now,' declares the Lord, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God."
Joel 2:12-13a (NIV)

Have you ever felt terrible about something you did, but never actually changed?

That's the difference between regret and repentance. Jesus opened His very first sermon in Matthew 4:17 with one word: "Repent." Not surprisingly, it's also the key to continuous victory over sin in your daily walk with Christ. But repentance is far more than acknowledging you messed up or feeling bad about it.

Repentance is action. It's a sincere, intentional turning away from sin because you finally understand it was wrong. The Greek word used in the New Testament for repent is “metanoia,” which literally means "to think differently after." It’s an after-thought that's completely different from your former thought. It's both a change of mind and a change of conduct.

When you discover sin in your life—or someone uncovers it—what happens next? You face a decision point. True repentance produces definitive change. It may include sorrow and remorse, but genuine repentance moves beyond feelings into transformation.

When temptation whispers at you tomorrow morning, don't just think "I shouldn't do this." Pray: "God, I'm turning away from this right now. Give me Your strength to walk in a different direction." Then physically remove yourself from that situation. Maybe you close the browser, leave the conversation, or delete the contact.

In Christ, you have the power to genuinely repent and walk free.

Prayer: God, right now I repent of my sin. I'm not just feeling bad, I'm turning away from those things that displease You. Give me the courage to make different choices when temptation returns. Help me pursue Your way in every area where I've compromised. Thank You that in Christ, I can truly change. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Bible Reference

“Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.
