"No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God."
1 John 3:9 (NIV)
Did you know that your body knows something's wrong before you do?
You get a fever or your throat aches. A scratch gets red and swollen. That's your immune system detecting infection and launching a counterattack.
Today’s verse explains that when you give your life to Jesus, God's Holy Spirit creates a spiritual immune system inside you. Just as God designed your immune system to fight harmful germs, releasing white blood cells to destroy invaders before they can spread, He’s given you His Spirit to identify and take sin down before it spreads.
An immune system doesn’t mean you don’t get sick, it means you are prepared when viruses attack. Just as your body learns and adapts to changing threats, you can grow more adept at detecting sin. You don't become immune to sin; you become sensitive to it.
Just as the body understands the need to act quickly, you can grow your ability to respond. A healthy immune system doesn't ignore threats, but responds immediately. The Holy Spirit detects any upcoming threat and teaches you to protect your heart. Where you once ignored sin or made excuses for it, now something inside you identifies it.
Be encouraged with this: that internal war between Spirit and flesh is not failure, but proof you're spiritually alive. It means your spirit detects vulnerability and is working to prevent you from becoming compromised. The more you walk with Jesus, the more the Holy Spirit increases your desire to please God instead of yourself.
Now fan that desire into a flame with small habits. Set a recurring reminder on your phone for Sunday evenings at 8 PM called "Heart Check." When it goes off, spend five minutes asking God what sin you might be tolerating this week that you need to confess. Write down what comes to mind, confess it, and ask for strength to fight it. Track what happens over the next few weeks. You’ll notice your spiritual immune system gets stronger the more you use it.
Prayer: God, thank You for saving me and giving me Your Spirit to make me sensitive to sin. Show me what I'm tolerating that needs to be confessed. Help me respond quickly when You alert me to danger in my heart. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
