“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."
Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV)
What would happen if you stopped asking "How can this church meet my needs?" and started asking "How can I meet others' needs?"
I once received an email that still blesses me today. A church member wrote: "It's been on my heart lately that I need to get back into serving. Through prayer, I've identified a few areas where my skills and interests align and I think God could use me in a powerful way." He then listed areas where he could serve and why his experience qualified him.
This is exactly the maturity described in Ephesians 4:11-12, where pastors and teachers equip God's people "for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." The church was never designed to have professional ministers doing all the work while everyone else watches.
Leaders are meant to equip everyone to minister.
Too often, we let "Somebody Else" handle the serving. We say, "Get Somebody Else to do that job, he will do it much better than I." But what if you decided today: "If Somebody Else can give time and support, my goodness, so can I!"
Jesus loved you enough to serve by dying for you. Your love for Him shows up as you serve in return. Whether it's parking cars, greeting visitors, teaching children, or supporting youth–your service matters eternally.
This week, identify one area where you could serve regularly in your church. Then take the initiative to volunteer without waiting to be asked.
Remember, you are the "Somebody Else" God wants to use.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for serving me through Your sacrifice. Forgive me for the times I've expected others to do what You've called me to do. Show me where my gifts can best serve Your church, and give me the courage to step forward. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
