“…That I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight, declares the Lord.”
(Jeremiah 9:24, NIV)
There are a lot of caricatures of God out there. The Speed Trap God with His radar gun, looking for someone breaking the law. The Aladdin God, who’s just a heavenly genie in a bottle, you only want when you have a wish. The Grandfather God, who wants everybody happy and doesn't care about morality or obedience.
But in this verse, God tells you exactly who He is. He highlights the aspects of His character you desperately need to remember.
God is gracious—He exercises loving kindness that will never leave you or forsake you. No matter what you've done, His kindness pursues you relentlessly.
God is judicious—He exercises justice and will reward what is right and punish what is wrong. He doesn't overlook evil or ignore sin. He's perfectly fair.
God is righteous—He not only does things right; He does the right thing. You can trust His decisions completely.
When you're facing injustice, remember: God sees it and will make it right. If you're struggling with guilt over past mistakes, remember: His loving kindness never leaves you. Maybe you're confused about a difficult decision, remember that He always does the right thing and will guide you.
Listen to Him through His Word. Live in obedience. Love Him with all your heart. This is how you know the God worth knowing.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are gracious, just, and righteous. Forgive me for the false images I've created of You. Help me know You as You truly are—not as I've imagined you to be. Thank You for Jesus, who shows me the fullness of who You are and what You’re like. Open my eyes, by Your Spirit, to see who You are and trust You completely. In Jesus’ mighty Name, Amen.
