"Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction."
1 Timothy 6:9 (NIV)
Did you know that one of the leading causes of death for bald eagles is greed?
Eagles can only carry half their body weight, but the temptation for a larger meal sometimes leads them to grab fish that are too heavy to lift. Their wings become waterlogged, they lose the ability to fly, and they drown. Greed becomes the trap that ensnares them.
In today’s verse, the Apostle Paul warns you about a similar trap. "Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction." (1 Tim. 6:9, NIV). The word "want" here describes a strong determination. It means an obsession that makes the pursuit of that obsession your life's primary goal.
When getting rich becomes your driving passion, you don't just stumble into temptation—you fall headfirst into a trap.
You may recognize this trap in your own life: working endless hours while family relationships suffer, accumulating debt to maintain a certain image, or compromising your values for financial gain. You find yourself singing like an old Elvis song lyric, "I'm caught in a trap and I can't get out."
The danger isn't having money—it's being consumed by the desire for it. When you listen to greed's voice instead of God's, you trade your freedom for golden chains. That pursuit can trap you, just like the drowning eagle.
Think about your desires today. Are you pursuing money or pursuing God? Do you crave His will or to fulfil your own desires? Trust the Lord with all your heart and all you have. As you do, instead of sinking into bondage, you’ll soar in freedom.
Prayer: Father, I praise You for Your generous provision. You’ve said that everything I need for life and godliness, I find in You. Lord, protect me from greed's trap and help me pursue You above all earthly treasures. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
