The Scarlet Thread

October 12, 2026

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
1 John 1:7 (ESV)

Right now, deep in your bone marrow, your body is producing 17 million red blood cells in the time it takes you to read this sentence.

That blood is already on the move, finishing a circuit through 60,000 miles of vessels. Your blood knows your body better than your mind does. It carries the record of every illness you’ve fought and every wound you’ve survived.

Mechanically speaking, your blood is the gasoline, the hydraulic fluid, the motor oil of the body. Without blood, there is no life. That is not just true physically; it is true spiritually.

When you open your Bible, a scarlet thread runs through every page. The word blood is found 415 times in Scripture. We are not only a people of the Book; we’re a people of the Blood.

Genesis begins with blood spilled in a field between two brothers, and Revelation closes with Jesus returning “...clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13, ESV). You cannot cut this Book anywhere without it bleeding.

Why does that matter? No sin was ever small enough to fix on your own. It cost the blood of God’s own Son. If your grudge or the criticism you keep replaying could have been excused, Jesus never would have had to bleed.

So don’t tell yourself your sin’s not that bad. Call it what it is. Then remember that just as blood reaches every part of your body, even the places you can’t see, His blood reaches every part of your spirit. No habit is too dirty, no thought too dark, and no piece of pride buried too deep for that blood to reach.

The words of Robert Lowry’s hymn remind us:

What can wash away my sin?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

What can make me whole again?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace:

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my righteousness:

nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the blood of Jesus. Thank You that Your blood cleanses me from all sin. When I am guilty and feel shame, remind me to run to the cross, where Your blood was poured out for me, washing me white as snow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
