When Your Brook Runs Dry

February 5, 2026

"So [Elijah] did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.”
1 Kings 17:5-7 (NIV)

Have you ever checked your bank account and felt your stomach drop? Maybe the emergency fund you've counted on for years will barely cover next month's bills.

That's what a dried-up brook feels like. Brooks dry up when you lose your 401k, lose your job, or lose a loved one. Maybe illness strikes your body. Elijah knows that feeling.

When everything seemed against him, he went to the middle of nowhere, drank from a creek and ate food delivered by birds. He never complained or questioned. Then 1 Kings 17:7 gave the final punch, "Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land."

Hang on a second. What? Elijah risked everything, became public enemy number one, hid in isolation, and now this? You'd expect him to rage at God. But here's what separates the God life from the good life. When your brooks dry up, and you've built your life on the good life, you cry, sigh, and deny. But when you live the God life, you keep trusting.

The question isn't "Why did my brook dry up?" It's "Where is my trust?" Are you trusting the brook or the God who filled it? Your money, job, health, and connections will all eventually fail. But God never forgets you, forsakes you, or fails you.

Maybe you feel anxious about your finances. Instead of letting concern take over, trust God. Just like God opened another brook for Elijah, you can trust Him to provide for you. Then take a step of faith and give that offering or help that neighbor.

Where God guides, God provides.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your faithfulness. I've been trusting my bank account, my job security, and my health more than I've been trusting You. Forgive me. You never forget, forsake, or fail Your children. When one door closes, You open another. Help me live with strong commitment to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
