Where Am I?

“Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.” - Romans 5:18-19

A good communicator does three things: He tells you what he is going to say, he says it, and then he tells you what he just said. The Apostle Paul was a great communicator. His letter to the Roman believers was packed full of deep truths that are not easy to understand. This letter contains the theology of the Gospel. Paul wanted them to understand not only that they are sinners, but also why they are sinners. And even more, he wanted them to see how great Jesus is. I believe God wants us to understand these same truths even 2,000 years later.

To sum it up, what Adam did to all of us through his sin, Jesus can undo for all of us by His sacrifice. This works both ways. We were not with Adam when he sinned, but we were in Adam when he sinned. So in Adam, we all sinned and were made sinners. We were not with Jesus when He died on the cross, but by faith, we can be in Jesus and be made righteous.

What the Great Communicator Paul has been telling us over and over in Romans 5:12-21 is that Adam’s sin is no match for Jesus’ death. Our sin is no match for God’s grace. We are all born sinners in Adam, but we can all be born-again saints in Jesus Christ. So my question for you is this: Where are you? Everybody in the world is in one of two places: You are either in Adam or you are in Jesus. You are either under the law or under grace.

Do you remember this little poem?

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Many years ago, Adam had the greatest fall in history. Through him, we all have fallen, too. But because of grace, we don’t have to stay broken.

Jesus Christ came to our wall.

Jesus Christ died for our fall.

He killed Queen Death,

He crushed King Sin;

And through grace put us together again.

Father, thank You for not leaving me broken in Adam. Through faith I am alive in You. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.
Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.
And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.
For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.
For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
