Where Does Faith Come From

May 16, 2025

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)

Have you ever wished you had more faith?

William Hunter was nineteen years old when he was burned at the stake in 1555. His crime? An insatiable thirst for God's Word. In a time when commoners were forbidden from possessing Bibles, William would sneak into his village church to read the one Bible chained to the altar. When caught, he was imprisoned for nine months. The bishop offered him freedom and forty pounds—enough to start a business—if he would promise never to read Scripture again. William refused, choosing death over being separated from God's Word.

Faith isn't something you manufacture through willpower or positive thinking. The Bible clearly states that Jesus is "the Author and Perfecter of our faith." Like a master author, He writes faith into our spiritual DNA.

Romans 10:17 says that "faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ." (NIV) Just as gold increases in value when you understand its worth, your faith grows stronger as you discover more about who Jesus is through His Word.

The more time you spend with Jesus through Scripture, prayer, and obedience, the more your faith will naturally develop. Your part is simply showing up and being willing to listen.

Today, take 15 minutes to read God's Word with an open heart. The Author of faith is ready to write His story in you.

Prayer: Father, thank You for being the Author and Finisher of my faith. As I spend time with You each day, open my eyes to the treasure it is to know You more. Let my faith grow stronger each day as I follow You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
